What it’s like traveling during Covid-19

The second week of July, my husband Luke and I took off on a one way flight to Las Vegas to pick up our RV that we bought right before the Pandemic back in February in California. The company drove it to the Nevada border for us and we picked it up from there!

We stayed at the Hilton at Boston Logan Airport the night before our flight, actually got a limo there since it was Luke’s Birthday! I figured that method of travel, with the stretch limo, would distance us from the driver and leave us the safest.

Once we arrived at the Hilton, we went straight up to our rooms because they offered remote check in on your phone!! Never heard of this before, but our phone worked as a room key. Sweet right?! I thought so.

The next morning we had no choice but get a shuttle over to the airport…this was a bit close for comfort but we all had our masks on. Once in the terminal, it was BUSY. Not nearly as busy as a regular day there, but still pretty busy. Everyone was in masks and the only time you had to take it off was for the TSA to look at your face and make sure it was you.

Once we got to our gate we quickly realized how empty it seemed. It was no where as crowded as a normal flight. We waited until very last to board because we had purchased Jetblue Mint tickets at the very front of the plane to add to our protection and distance from other passengers. I would say that the plane was about 1/3 full.

There was only two other passengers in first class. Sadly, they had no drink or food service but very graciously offered us a wrapped ham and cheese croissant or cheese platter. We had a choice of bottled water or wine. Since it was a morning flight, we stuck to the water! But later on in the flight the stewardess offered us a delicious cookie, and we figured what the heck, lets have a mini bottle of prosecco since we weren’t driving that day.

Upon arrival in the Las Vegas, the airport was rather empty. No slot machines dinging as usual! Only a few were working. We got an Uber to bring us to Primm, NV where we were meeting the RV driver to get our Motorhome from him. The Uber driver told us he has been busy, lots of people have started coming back to Vegas now. However, some casinos and hotels were still not open.

Once in Primm, to get into the hotel/casino they took our temperature and put a wrist band that had the date on it to prove they checked our temperature. I was actually very appreciative of this gesture. However, the hotel room was DISGUSTING!!! Looked like it hadn’t been cleaned, stains on the pillow and hair in the tub. Literal dust on the counter that I wiped off myself!!! We ended up leaving that hotel and going and staying at a Hyatt Place which was EXTREMELY clean.

Once we got the RV and headed on the road the next day, we made as little stops as possible. We monitored what states were doing what, how many people were wearing masks and what precautions were being made everywhere. Overall, across the country MOST places, everyone was wearing masks. Most if not all fast food restaurants that we went to had drive thru only, some let you walk into pick up the food but you couldn’t stay.

I am very impressed by all the states we drove through and the efforts they are putting forth. We drove through Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts. Even at the campsites and KOA’s that we stayed in.

All in all, it was a great trip but a quick one filled with a bit of fear of getting this virus.

Keep staying safe & keep wearing your masks!

XO, Mandz
